Smo, born Bongumenzi Mtshali, is a South African pedagogical practitioner, writer, poet, content creator, and philanthropist. Based in Johannesburg, he is widely recognized in the language discipline as a promising scholar and research fellow with a growing reputation for his contributions to African language education and decolonial thought.

Bongumenzi’s linguistic journey began in high school, where he was inspired by his teacher, Mr. S.H. Ximba, to pursue a career in language. In 2020, he enrolled at the University of Johannesburg, where he earned a Bachelor of Education degree, majoring in isiZulu and History. He later completed an Honours degree in African Languages and is currently pursuing a Master’s in the same field.
During his undergraduate studies, he launched the YouTube channel Bongumenzi Mtshali, which has since become one of the leading platforms for isiZulu language lessons, amassing over 2,000 subscribers and more than 78,000 views. His commitment to accessible, culturally grounded education is evident in both his digital content and academic work.
Bongumenzi has served as a tutor and Sessional Lecturer at the University of Johannesburg, where he supports PGCE and final-year students majoring in isiZulu under the mentorship of Dr. I.K. Mndawe. He has also taught at the University of the Witwatersrand, further expanding his impact in higher education.
His work is deeply rooted in the principles of decolonial education, drawing intellectual inspiration from scholars such as Mahmood Mamdani, Sabelo Ndlovu-Gatsheni, Siphamandla Z. Lushaba, and Frantz Fanon. He is also artistically influenced by musicians like Mgqumeni Khumalo and academics including Dr. G.B. Thwala, Dr. M.O. Mbathu, and P Thete.
